Long Island Casino Avoids Citizen-Led Effort to Be Shut Down

Casino-goers and Long Island suburbs will still be able to visit Jake’s 58 in Iceland after a state judge thwarted an attempt by locals to close the casino. The fate of the casino was unknown for several years after its owner, Suffolk OTB, found himself in financial trouble, which led to the announcement of bankruptcy. Opponents of the casino have tried to take advantage of the company’s difficulty in enforcing the closure, but have failed again.

Jake’s 58, which started as a Delaware North area before being sold to Suffolk, has been a regular feature in southern New York since its opening in 2017. From the beginning, however, the community was met in different ways to serve. Delaware North signed an agreement in 2016 with the Village of Islandia in Suffolk County to pay $ 47 million over 20 years for casino building rights in Icelandia. That, for some locals, was illegal and was a merger between the city and the casino manager. Their appeal was taken to court, but they were defeated.

That first defeat came in 2018 when a judge ruled that the casino’s approval had not violated any land division laws and did not support the view that there had been a merger. Opponents have not stopped and appealed the decision, which has taken so far to reach a conclusion. All this time, Suffolk has been restructuring its business to pay off its debts and get out of debt, hoping Jake’s 58 will survive.

With the appeal filed by Central Islip Regional Court Judge Joan M. Azrack last week, the matter has come to an end. Azrack argued in a previous court ruling that the opposition had not shown sufficient evidence to support their argument and that there was no evidence that cooperation had taken place. The mayor of Iceland Allan M. Dorman was not surprised by the outcome and said after the ruling, “From the very beginning of this case, the district has been hoping to succeed in this matter. We are happy with the court’s decision. ”

Jake’s 58 He Has a Vital Role in the Economy

Given that they are New Yorkers, it is unlikely that opponents will give up easily and might attract attention. In the meantime, however, Jake’s 58 will continue to operate and provide significant financial resources to the national and domestic economy. According to data from the New York Gaming Commission, the site has been a strong source of revenue since its opening, with a $ 360.5 million bet placed last month. In that case, buyers seized $ 338 million.

Much of that victory goes back to the local economy through retail sales, but Jake’s 58 also provides real money to the Village of Islandia, too. The move last month also allowed the state public education fund to receive $ 9.8 million directly. In addition, Suffolk also cuts its money into Suffolk County.
