India has seen a substantial rise in online gambling activity in recent years. Currently, the industry is thought to be worth approximately $1.5 billion, and this figure is set to increase to approximately $3 billion by 2023.
This is despite the fact that India-based companies are not permitted to provide online casino gambling services in most states and in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh all online gambling is prohibited. This was also the situation in Karnataka until a recent High Court decision overturned the ban.
Given the legal issues, it’s not surprising that offshore casinos dominate the industry in the country providing services to Indian players.
You only need to look at this brand report from JustGamblers to see that awareness of offshore casino brands is high in India.
The respected casino information site used search data to discover how often people searched for various brands each month. Using this data, they calculated the average search figure.
From this research, Bet365 emerged as the most recognized online casino brand in India. The company’s average searches per month figure were found to be 419,000. This amounted to a 29.9% share of the overall search figure.
This average search figure for Bet365 is 22.5% more than Dafabet, the second most recognized brand, and 86.2% more than Betway in the third place when it comes to brand awareness. Other recognized online betting companies like 10Cric, LeoVegas, and Lottoland are further behind again according to the data.
To show just how dominant the top three are, they accounted for 70.4% of the average searches and from these three, Bet365 has been shown to have the highest level of brand awareness by a long way.
Right now, the future looks bright for offshore online casinos in India, and given the current legal landscape, this situation seems likely to continue. As long as it remains impossible for Indian-based operators to provide online gambling services, offshore companies will continue to provide online casino facilities and brands like Bet365 will continue to build on their already impressive brand awareness levels.
Of course, the legal landscape could change. It’s possible that more states will outlaw online paid gaming and gambling although the Karnataka situation may be an indication that this will not open.
The reverse of this is that there are many calls for paid online gaming and gambling to be regulated. Doing this would bring some much-needed funds for state and national governments. It could also mean that Indian-based operators would be permitted to provide online casino services which would likely have a significant impact on the market.
Any such potential changes are likely a long way off if they happen at all. Only time will tell if the tide turns but right now brands like Bet365 will continue to dominate the industry in India.
