8 Ball Pool Game Rules

The Game’s Object: Eightball pool is a kind of game that we play with a cue ball and 15 object balls numbered from 1 to 15. There are two players in this game; one of the players chose to pocket the solid colored ball numbered from 1 to 7, and the other player chooses to pocket the striped ball numbered from 9 to 15. At first, players have to pocket a group of balls that they have chosen, and the players have to pocket the 8- balls. The player who first pockets the eight balls will be the winner. The players should have proper skills and knowledge to win the game.

Call Shot: In this, it is not necessary to indicate object balls and pockets. If the opponent player is unsure of the shot, he can ask which ball and pocket. In the case of call shots, the bank shots and the combination shots are not conclusive. At the same time, they are calling for the object ball and the decided pocket. If calling for a shot, it is not essential to indicate details like cushions, banks, kisses, caroms, etc. Whether it belongs to shooter or opponent, any ball will be count as a pocket in case of foul pocket. The player will remain to pocket the ball in case he or she is legally pocketing. If they missed pocketing, the chance would automatically shift to the opponent player.

Racking the Balls: Here we are enlisting all the rules for racking the ball below:

  1. In case of racking the ball, the player who will first break will rack the ball.
  2.  Initially, it starts with toss with the help of a coin or with the lag test to determine who will rack the balls in the recreational use game.
  3. One ball is kept on either side of the table, and players require to shoot at the end of the cushion in lag test. The players whose ball will first hit the pillow and bounces back closest to the point or spot from where they had shot their ball will decide who breaks.
  4. The player who has the lowest official standing in the league always breaks first in a professional game. Sometimes referee can also rack the ball.

A Black and white dot is located at the end of the table

The billiard tables are often marked with a foot spot (a spot from where the players stand during the break shot) located about halfway between the corner and the side pocket at the center of one end of the table. If the foot spot is not marked on the table, then, in that case, to determine the foot spot, use the marking around the edge of the table. When you are standing at the short end, the site should be marked at the center of the table.

  1. Keep Triangle racks over the foot spot: keep the rack over the top of the foot spot such that the black and white dot should touch the interior of the triangle. This spot is known as the apex of the rack. Ensure that the ball placed in the apex of the rack should be in the middle of the dot.
  2. Keep the rack parallel to the short end of the table: while positioning the apex of the rack on the foot spot, make sure that the base of the rack should be straight. The corner of the rack should be at an equal distance from the corner of the pockets.
  3. Alternating the break: the player who wins the lag test has given a chance to break. In each game, the player will continue to alternate breakings.
  4. Jumping of balls and masse shots are not allowed in the eight ball pool: in the case when the forthcoming ball moves during an attempt to jump the cue ball over or around the numbered ball, which is considered as the object ball, then it is the case of “cue ball foul.”
  5. Legal break shot: legal break shot case arises when the players:
  6. Pocket the ball
  7. Drive four numbered balls

In case the players failed to make a legal break, then this is the case of a foul, and the opposition player has two options: first, to accept the table as it is, and second re-rack the balls and shoot the opening break and allow the opponent player to re-break.

  1. Scratch on a legal break: in the case when a player scratches on a legal break then three condition arises:
  2. All that balls that have been pocket will remain pocketed.
  3. It will consider a foul case.
  4. The table will be open.

The players have to shoot the cue ball past the head string and make a cue ball to come back behind the head string and then hit the object ball.

  1. Object ball jumped off the table on the break: if the object ball is bounced off the table in the break shot, it is the case of foul. Now the coming player has the two options:
  2. Accept the table as it is
  3. Take a cue ball in hand behind the head string and continue shooting.
  4. Eightball pocketed on the break: the breaker can ask for re-racking of the balls or else have an eight ball spotted and continue shooting in case if eight balls are pocketed on the break. If the breaker scratches while pocketing eight balls, then the turn will give to the opponent player.
  5. Opening break: the player performing the shot will continue to shoot until and unless he/ she has legally pocketed any object ball on the break.
  6. Open table: the table is open when the choices for the solids or stripes group have not yet been determined. In the case of an open table, hitting solid first to make a stripe or vice versa is considered legal. The table opens after the break shot, and if eight balls are 1st ball that comes in contact, the no solid and stripe may be scored in favor of the shooter, and the shooter loses his turn.
  7. Choice of group: it is determined only when a player legally pockets the object ball after the break shot.
  8. Legal shots: in legal shots, the player who is shooting must hit one of the balls from the selected group that is solid or stripe and pocket a numbered ball or contact rail with the help of a cue ball or numbered ball. The shooter is allowed to bank the cue ball 1st off the rail before the object ball, and once the object ball has contacted, it must be pocketed. If the player fails to do so, then it is considered to be foul.
  9. Safety shot: The player may declare “safety” and discontinue their turn. A safety shot is also known as a legal shot. If the player did not claim safety, and one of the shooter’s balls is pocketed, the shooter has to shoot again. The ball pocketed in a safety shot will remain pocketed.
  10. Scoring: the player is allowed to score until and unless he fails to pocket the ball legally. If the player legally pockets all the balls of this group, he shoots to pocket the eight ball.
  11. Scratching: in scratching, the opposing player will get the ball in hand. Scratching is an unfair practice.
  12. Foul penalty: in the fall penalty, the cue ball is handed to the opposing player, which means the player can place the ball anywhere on the table. A foul penalty prevents the player from intention foul. The player can use his hand or any body parts to position the cue ball.
  13. Combination shots: in a combination shot, you cannot contact eight balls first. Instead, you can use eight balls in combination with an object ball to pocket an object ball.
  14. Playing the eight ball: if the eight balls are not pocketed or jumped from the table, then, in that case, the scratch or foul is not loss of game, and a combination shot is never used to pocket the eight ball.
  15. Loss of game: in the following case, the player loses the game:
  16. In case of pocketing the eight ball on the same stroke.
  17. In case of jumping and knocking the eight ball.
  18. In the case of 3rd infraction of the slow play rule.
  19. In case the player has pocketed the cue ball and eight balls on the break.
