THE EASY GUIDE ON HOW TO SET RUMMY CARDS!

Rummy, no doubt, is still one of the best-known card games in the United States and all over the world. A very exciting and interesting feature of this game is that it is so simple to play and has a lot of variations.

In this article, you all are going to have a look at how to make sequences and sets in the rummy game.

A set is a group of three or more cards of the same value but of different suits. When you are forming sets, you can also use wild cards and joker cards. In rummy, the cards in each rank are low to high starting with Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, and King. Ace, Queen, and King each have 10 points. The remaining cards have values equal to their face values. For example, 6 cards will have 6 points and so on.

The objective of Rummy is to arrange 13 cards invalid sets and sequences. To win this game, you need to make a maximum of two sequences, out of which one needs to be pure and the rest can be any valid sequence or set.

If you do not make any pure sequence, you can not make a valid rummy declaration. This is one of the most important Rummy rules.

Forming Sequences

First of all, you all need to know about sequences. After all, What is a sequence?

In Rummy, a sequence is a group of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. There are two kinds of sequences that are generally made in rummy: Pure and Impure sequences. To win the game of rummy you need at least one pure sequence in your rummy hands.

Pure sequence:

A pure sequence is said to be a group of three or more cards of the same suit, placed in consecutive order. If you will form a pure sequence, you can not use any joker and wild card.

Example:

3♠ 4♠ 5♠ 6♠ ( It is a pure sequence with four cards. There is no use of joker or wild cards here.)

An impure sequence is said to be a group of three or more cards of the same suit with one or more Joker cards used.

Some examples are listed below to show how you can form an impure sequence.

Examples:

  1. 6♦ 7♦ Q♠  9♦ ( Here, a Q♠ card is used which is replacing 8♦ to form an impure sequence.)
  2. 5 ♠ Q♥ 7♠ 8♠ PJ (Here, an impure sequence is made when  Q♥ as a wild joker is replacing 6♠ and Printed Joker is replacing 9♠.)

Forming sets

A set is formed when there is a group of three cards or more that belong to different suits but have the same value. You can use wild cards and joker cards when you are forming sets.

Some of the examples of sets are listed below which you can go through:

  1. 9♠ 9♥  9♦ 9♣ ( Here, the Rummy set is formed with four 9 cards of different suits.)
  2. A♣ A♦ A♠ ( In this set, all the Aces are of different suits, making a valid set.)
  3. 5♠ 5♦ 5♣PJ ( Here, Printed Joker replaces 5♥ to make a valid set.)
  4. 5♦ 5♣ Q♠ PJ ( Here, Q♠ has been used as a wildcard to replace 5♥ and the Printed Joker I used to replace 5♠ to make a valid set.)

The invalidity of the sets

As mentioned above, the set is formed with the same cards of different suits. However, you can not use two or more cards of the same suit. This is considered an invalid declaration.

Another point that is to be noted is that a set can have more than four cards. Ao, if you have a set of cards and you are using an additional joker card, then it becomes a five-card group in total and still be a valid set.

Some of the examples are listed below so that you all may be aware of the invalidity of the sets.

  1. Q♥  Q♥  Q♦ ( There are two queens of the same suit making it an invalid set.)
  2. 7♠  7♦  7♠  7♥  Q♥ ( It has two 7 cards of the same suit. Here, Q♥ as a fifth card is valid but two 7 spades are making it an invalid set.)
